Kinja'd!!!

I’m a lab assistant for a basic course on automotive technology, meaning I and two colleagues teach new students some practical skills, and basic knowlegde.

However since university bought 4 new engines (2 VAG TSIs and 2 GM/Opel CDTis) we needed to prep them. This basically means breaking them open for the first time. Damn, those head tension bolts are tight.

Anyhow, where half way by now. But I gotta stop due to lectures, but paid wrenching without time pressure is quite fun.

Not a bad day at work!

Last motor I deconstructed I was having trouble getting one of the heads off (GM 60' V6). Me and a neighbor couldn’t get it off for anything, we just kept hammering and tapping in wedges. Eventually we broke the aluminum head in half (not a problem, I was scrapping it anyways).

We missed the head bolt behind the dipstick.

Derp.

The question is can you put them back together with no extra parts. J/K

Here’s hoping your students are more useful with hand tools than my junior level aero lab!

...I was the only one who knew how to use a torque wrench. I actually called up my dad after class to thank him.

Well, I hope so, haha. Though we keep the ancillaries off for simplicity’s sake.

Sometimes you just miss stuff, happens to the best!

We tried to remove VAG timing chains without the tools, which meant we broke the chain guides. There probably was another way, bit we couldn’t bother to find out.

Years ago I had an ‘85 Omni while in college. I did head gaskets, timing belts and new bottom end bearings/oil pump during the two years I owned that turd. But without exception, every time we worked on it there were some kind of bolts or nuts left over. Every damn time. And it always started and ran.

My theory is Chrysler knew what a POS the car was going to be and that frustrated owners would be wrenching on it themselves, so they had to build in extra fasteners.

Since the Omni was French in origin, extra parts are a given.

Vaaat? How do you figure it was French?

It was Designed by Chrysler Europe designed in the UK and Engineered by Simca in France.

Compare and contrast: Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon and Chrysler/Talbot Horizon in that order.

Yeah, it was a case of not being concerned about the final product and tunnel vision.

That assumes the guides weren’t already broken :P

Yea, as any tech will tell you, being an engineer does not mean you are inherently any good at wrenching

They were re-engineerd in the US for the US. These things tended to come with Chrysler engines in the US. Or with a VW diesel engine.

Last year’s batch wasn’t too bad, here is hoping to this year’s batch being capable as well.

How to use a torque wrench should be a two day course.

Intern: the fixture (pressure vessel) is broken. its wont seal correctly?!

Me: and you torqued it evenly?

Intern: yes

Me:(what I wanted to do)

Kinja'd!!!

never learned you don’t put one bolt in, torque, insert next one so the seal was squashed out the side.
